Last night my oldest son and I went to a LAN gaming party. Well, “last night” isn't totally accurate. We got there around 1 PM Saturday and left at 3 AM Sunday. Quite a marathon session!

That late night made today a bit slow and bleary. Was it worth it? Oh yeah!

We played several hours of Counterstrike: Source. What a beautiful game. Just like the original, but much prettier. It is exceedingly rare for the sequel to a game to be anywhere near as good as the original. Counterstrike managed to avoid this problem by being the same as the original. Which is awesome - if you have the perfect game, don't try to make it better, just make it prettier!

Then we played a few hours of Unreal Tournament 2004. This game is really good, and I've played untold hours online. It is even better in a LAN game because you can hear the shouts and groans of everyone around you :-)

Finally we played a few hours of Ghost Recon. Here we have a multiplayer game unmatched by anything else I've played. Nine player coop against a very good and hard-to-beat AI. This is really what it is all about. Sure it is fun to play against other people, but it is a lot more fun to play with other people. And this game requires patience, planning and cooperation - as opposed to the others that just require fast eye-hand coordination and a super-fast video card.

So in my view we ended the party by playing the best (and yet by far the oldest) game of the three.
