On the 4th of July I attended the wedding of one of my dearest friends to his partner of 15 years. It was a very nice secular service, held on a 14th story balcony overlooking the Charles River and the Boston skyline.

Wayne was one of my college roommates, way too many years ago, and was a groomsman in my wedding. Of course we have remained close friends throughout the intervening years. In many ways Wayne is like a second brother to me.

Wayne was introduced to Brent perhaps 15 years ago at Minicon: at the time the largest sci-fi convention in Minneapolis. A mutual (and extremely flamboyant) friend John introduced them and they hit it off immediately. Obviously it was no short-term thing, because they’ve been together ever since – through various career changes, cross-country moves and a host of other life changes.

It was only fitting then, that John officiated at the wedding as Wayne and Brent exchanged vows and rings. The ceremony fit Wayne’s personality to a tee – direct, to the point and very moving. As with any wedding, many people cried, and I think everyone got at least a little misty-eyed.

Wayne’s grandfather attended, and commented that he’d never seen Wayne so happy. I think that’s absolutely true, and bodes well for the future of this loving couple.

Congratulations to my very good friends!

As an aside, my other Bostonian friends Kevin and Brenda attended the wedding as well. Kevin, as an old punk rocker, is a staunch wearer-of-black (though punk rocker or not, I am now told that he likes Abba – a factoid that hurts my brain…).

But anyway, the wedding invitation specifically requested guests wear comfortable and bright summer clothing. In the pics below you can see here the vicious gleam of victory in Brenda’s eyes at the fact that Kevin did indeed wear the orange shirt she bought for him :)

Even better, you can see that Kevin was talked (with some serious prodding) into dancing in the wedding dance. Wonders will never cease!

I was SO happy to have so many dear friends in attendance. You've all been so supportive throughout the years. It meant a lot to both of us.

Thank you.

Wayne.
